What makes a sitemap invalid?
Missing <loc>, mixed index and urlset roots, more than 50,000 URLs, or loc values that are not valid URLs. lastmod and changefreq mistakes are warnings.
Is this the official Google checker?
No. It is an independent parser based on the public sitemap protocol. Use Search Console as well for indexing status.
